Business Phone System FAQ
Is your company searching for a more powerful way to communicate with your customers?
If so, you owe it to yourself to read this document carefully.

This information is designed to help you make sensible choices when choosing your business phone system. It contains information on features and pricing of the new wave of digital PBXs that use VoIP. It explains what VoIP is and why it is more powerful and more affordable than legacy phone systems.

Why would my company want a VoIP phone system?
VoIP is the smart choice for several reasons:
  1. VoIP provides cutting edge features on an inexpensive platform.
  2. VoIP can offer significant cost savings on long distance calls.
  3. VoIP systems cost thousands less than analog PBXs.
  4. VoIP reduces “telephone tag” and increases the power of your communication with your customers, vendors and employees.
  5. VoIP systems cost less to maintain. Many basic administrative functions of a VoIP system can be managed through a simple web based interface. This eliminates costly technician service calls to perform simple tasks, such as adding an extension for a new employee.
  6. VoIP can mesh with your computer systems to provide fast information at your fingertips.
  7. Your competition has one or will be getting one soon.
What is the difference between my current phone service and VoIP?
Your current phone service most likely uses POTS lines or T1 PRIs to get dialtone. POTS stands for Plain Old Telephone Service. It is the dial tone service obtained through the PSTN (Public Switched Telephony Network) provided by your current phone company. With POTS lines or T1 PRIs, most businesses, pay a fee for local calling and then spend hundreds or even thousands per month on long distance calls through a separate carrier.

VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. It describes a technology that uses computer networks to communicate instead of the phone companies’ traditional switching network. VoIP can save tons of money on your long distance calling. Using a gateway provider (such as Ntelos™, Vonage™, etc.), a company makes long distance calls over the Internet (using VoIP). This bypasses the PSTN (phone company’s switching network) on the originating call saving 80 – 95% of the cost of the call. When using VoIP the digital phone sets use your computer network jacks rather than rj-11 jacks that analog phones require. This opens your phone system to many innovative capabilities.

What are some of the special features of a VoIP phone system?
One example: Merging your phone system with your company’s computer network can provide several tools for selling products/services to your customers. For example, you can have your phone system automatically retrieve customer information and display it on your computer, whenever that customer calls. This allows sales and customer service staff to better service your clients.

Another: When you work from home your business phone system comes with you. Using your own internet service to connect, your VoIP phone will work just as it does at the office. You’ll have the same extension and calls will come from your business’ number just like they normally would.

May I keep my current phone service and still benefit from VoIP PBX features?
Yes! The data retrieval and other features that make VoIP PBXs so powerful can be used without switching to a VoIP gateway provider. But you won’t realize the cost savings on your long distance bills.

May I Provide my Own Phones?
In our RVPBX turnkey package, Rev.Net™ only uses approved phones found in the list below. If you have any of those models, we would be happy to work with them. We can also work with your existing analog phones. However, an analog to digital converter would be required for each analog phone and the services provided by that phone would be limited at best.

What other equipment would I need?
  • Dell(recommended) Server – 4 GB RAM Duo CORE processor recommended. Running Linux with Asterisk and TrixBox for every 72 incoming phone lines. Each server can also handle up to 250 extensions.
  • POTS card or PRI card. These are only needed if you plan to remain with your current phone company for local calling and they don’t offer VoIP.
  • Optional – Analog to Digital converter for legacy phone sets.
Rev.Net™ offers everything needed, to provide a complete turnkey solution for your company. Including installation, configuration and training.

What if I can’t decide between standard phone service and a gateway provider?
Rev.Net™’s VoIP system is completely compatible with either system. So you don’t have to decide right away. Rev.Net™’s RVPBX gives you three options. (1) PSTN-Only, (2) PSTN-Fallback, and (3) VoIP-only. If you choose options 2 or 3, you may be able to obtain significant savings on both your monthly long distance bill, and on your line usage charges, from your existing carrier. Call us for more details.

I’ve heard VoIP just isn’t as clear as an analog call.
When your system is configured properly, VoIP calls have as good or better sound quality than a standard call.

Choosing the Right Phones
Rev.Net™'s VoIP solution supports most standard analog phones and select IP phones including models from Aastra, Polycom and Grandstream. Each of these IP phones have been fully tested and qualified by Rev.Net™ to operate with the Asterisk platform and Rev.Net™ applications. Some non-supported features on standard analog or IP phones may not work, even though they are present on the device as shipped from the original manufacturer. Please check with us to ensure that you are utilizing the correct firmware and features.

IP Phones
With the large number of IP Phones available, Rev.Net™ has carefully selected those that are tested and qualified to work with our systems.

Analog Phones
To utilize an analog phone with your RVPBX, you must purchase an appropriate Analog>Digital interface, installed and properly configured for each analog phone. Note that not all features found on analog phones will work.

What about Annual Software Maintenance & Support Agreements
Annual maintenance contracts are available for a yearly fee of 24% of the system purchase price.

This support contract covers:
  • 7 days a week on-call response to any problems relating to manufacturing defects or initial configuration errors in the phone system.
  • Any technical support phone calls regarding the basic functions of your system.
  • Standard software and firmware upgrades required for maintaining the integrity and operability of your VoIP server. Insurance covering damage to the server is included in this fee.
  • Overnight replacement for damaged/defective handsets is also included.
On-Demand services are available as an alternative to a support contract at $135.00/hour.

In summary, a VoIP phone system can bring many tools not available with a legacy phone system. VoIP PBXs save significant amounts in your communication budget. These phone systems cost about 65% of what a legacy PBX would cost. They are also much cheaper to operate when combined with a gateway VoIP provider. Most importantly, Rev.Net™ can provide the hardware, install the system, configure and maintain it, acquire a gateway provider for long distance and train your staff on it’s use. All for one price.

So when you decide to lead your company to the next level of sales and service while saving money on your long distance bills, call Rev.Net™ at 540-772-3282 ext. 710 and say you want to order an RVPBX. We’ll take it from there and guarantee your satisfaction with the entire process. Call today. You’ll be glad you did!
